Insight Toolkit (ITK)
The gold-standard open-source library for multidimensional image segmentation and registration.
ITK-SNAP is a free, open-source software application for segmenting structures in 3D and 4D biomedical images.

ITK-SNAP is a multi-platform software application designed for segmenting structures within 3D and 4D biomedical images. Initially developed at the University of North Carolina, it emphasizes ease of use and focuses specifically on image segmentation tasks. Led by researchers at the Penn Image Computing and Science Laboratory (PICSL) at the University of Pennsylvania, ITK-SNAP offers semi-automatic segmentation through active contour methods, manual delineation, and image navigation. It supports various 3D image formats like NIfTI and DICOM, allowing concurrent viewing and segmentation of multiple images. Features include manual and automatic image registration, between-slice segmentation interpolation, and a 3D cut-plane tool. With a focus on user interaction, ITK-SNAP prioritizes a streamlined user interface. It is intended for researchers and clinicians working with medical imaging data.

Uses active contour methods to automatically refine initial segmentation based on image gradients and user-defined parameters. It evolves a surface to fit the boundaries of the target structure.
Enables users to draw segmentation contours manually on each slice of the 3D image. It offers precise control over the segmentation boundary.
Allows aligning multiple images to a common coordinate system. It corrects for motion or positional differences between scans.
Enables users to visualize and edit segmentation results in 3D by defining a cutting plane. This allows direct manipulation of the segmentation boundary in 3D space.
Allows concurrent loading and viewing of multiple images with linked cursors. It enables comparison and segmentation across different imaging modalities.
