A hierarchical verb lexicon linking syntactic and semantic patterns for English verbs.

VerbNet (VN) is a large, freely available, online lexical resource for English verbs. It is structured as a hierarchical verb lexicon, linking syntactic and semantic patterns. VN extends Levin's verb classes by refining and adding subclasses to achieve coherence. Each verb class is described by thematic roles, selectional preferences, and frames. These frames detail syntactic descriptions and semantic representations, patterned on the Dynamic Event Model. VerbNet integrates with other resources like WordNet, PropBank, and FrameNet. Recent extensions have incorporated new classes from Korhonen and Briscoe (K&B) and Korhonen and Ryant (K&R), significantly expanding coverage of PropBank tokens and addressing limitations of Levin's original work. The resource is valuable for NLP tasks like semantic role labeling and parsing.

Explore all tools that specialize in semantic role labeling. This domain focus ensures VerbNet delivers optimized results for this specific requirement.
VerbNet organizes verbs into a hierarchical structure, enabling inheritance of syntactic frames and semantic predicates from parent classes, facilitating generalization and abstraction in verb classification.
Each verb class in VerbNet contains syntactic frames, depicting the possible surface realizations of the argument structure, including transitive, intransitive, and prepositional phrases.
VerbNet associates each syntactic frame with semantic predicates, representing the meaning of the event using boolean expressions such as 'motion', 'contact', or 'cause'.
VerbNet defines a set of thematic roles (e.g., Agent, Patient, Instrument) that are used to constrain the types of arguments allowed by verbs, enhancing role labeling accuracy.
VerbNet is mapped to other lexical resources like WordNet, PropBank, and FrameNet, enabling interoperability and knowledge sharing between different linguistic resources.
